You know how these work. A collection of common questions I'm asked. I'll update this list as I think of more questions that belong here. Most will be about either otherkin or witchcraft, particularly draconic witchcraft.
Q: How do I know if I’m otherkin/learn more about my kintype/remember more of a past life?
A: Meditation, introspection, and time. This isn’t something you learn over
night. Finding yourself is the work of a lifetime, both finding who or
what you may have been in a past life, and deciding who you want to be
in this one. Do not expect easy answers. Guided meditations can help. I
have an otherkin meditation you can try.
Q: How/when did you discover you were otherkin?
A: From my earliest memories I had a sense of being other, not belonging,
not being human. My skin didn’t fit right and I had to learn the rules
of this place and these people and play a role to fit in, but it all
felt unnatural. My mother even used to call me a changeling, and she was
only half joking.
My grandmother raised me in a witchcraft
tradition, but I wanted to know more. When I began exploring online I
quickly found the otherkin community and it clicked immediately. I’d
been experiencing phantom limbs at that point for a couple years, and
dreams which seemed like memories for even longer.
Other people in my
life kept me for years from actually figuring out my kintype and my
proper identity. Which is why I am so adamant that only you can define
yourself, and you should be distrustful of anyone who claims to be able
to tell you who and what you are.
Q: What otherkin Tumblr blogs would you recommend?
A: There are so many. Here are a few off the top of my head. I’m probably forgetting someone important.

Q: What is a furry?
A: In short
the furry fandom consists of fans and creators of art and fantasy
featuring anthropomorphic animals. The typical Disney animator probably
doesn’t think of themselves as a furry, but then again they might. There
are lots of ways to be a furry. A lot of the community are artists or
writers. A lot are just fans. Others wear fursuits, etcetera.
Furries
are not the same as otherkin. As the name suggests, furries are fans of
a style of art and fiction. Otherkin have actual non-human identities.
Some furries have a “fursona” which is an idealized representation of
themselves (or not quite themselves) as an anthro animal, but that has
more in common with being otherhearted than otherkin. There is a
great deal of overlap between the two communites. I for instance
consider myself to be both. I’m editing a book series that
features anthropomorphic animals, so I suppose Snowy and I count as
furry content creators. She certainly does.
Q: Where do I start?
A: There’s a
lot of reading in your future. Read everything, even things people tell
you aren’t very good. Everything has value, and every work has its
flaws. No one is perfect. Take what works for you and feels right, and
leave the rest. Focus first on meditation, visualization, and
protection. Candle magic is an easy place to start with spells. Here’s
a Reading List to start with and the Psi Ball Exercise will help with visualization and basic energy work.
Q: Who is Hekate?
A: Hekate is a
Hellenic goddess who presently
has a strong representation in modern Wicca and Neo-Paganism. She
is, among other things the patron goddess of witchcraft and magic,
crossroads, the restless dead and wandering spirits, and the homeless
and outcasts.
She is cited in Hesiod's Theogeny as the only Titan who retained
all of her former power after the conflict between the Titans and the
Theoi, and the only goddess with dominion over land, sea, and sky. She
is the keeper of the keys to all realms, and the warden of the gates of
Tartaros. Theogeny cites her parents as Asteria and Perses, but I favor the older description of her as a daughter of Nyx. I am and have always been her devoted servant.
Q:
Is the astral plane dangerous?
A: On the whole it is no more or less dangerous than here; perhaps less because injuries are not as severe. The
worst possible consequence is the destruction of the astral body, which
will repair itself over a period of months to decades. This can result in not being able to reach the astral and may limit one’s ability
to use magic. Phantom
pain from astral injuries is a possibility, as is things like temporary
dizziness, dissociation, nerve pain, etcetera.
The worst I’ve ever been
hurt was a fight with another dragon which resulted in a headache and
exhaustion for an evening. Avoiding
conflict and injury is the same as it is here. Learn to recognize and
avoid dangerous areas. It’s best if you have a guide you can trust. But
the rewards outweigh the risks, to my thinking. I recommend learning to shield first.
